What is Media Content Photography and why is it important?


Like always, before I say anything about the topic, I want to make sure that you know the dictionary meanings of a few words used in the post. So let’s understand a few words:


The main means of mass communication (broadcasting, publishing, and the Internet) regarded collectively.
Communication channels through which news, entertainment, education, data, or promotional messages are disseminated. Media includes every broadcasting and narrowcasting medium such as newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, billboards, direct mail, telephone, fax, and internet. Media is the plural of medium and can take a plural or singular verb, depending on the sense intended.

As per Wikipedia, content is the information and experiences that are directed towards an end-user or audience. Content is “something that is to be expressed through some medium, as speech, writing or any of various arts”.

We are going to talk about media content photography and it’s importance in this blog. If you haven’t read the first two blogs in the personal branding series, then I would suggest you go through them first because the whole intent of these blogs is to help people understand what is personal branding and why professional-quality visuals are really important for your business/brand.

In this blog, we’ll stick to just two points:
1) What is media content photography?
2) Why is it important for any business?

Photography done to create content to be shared on different media channels is Media Content Photography. SIMPLE!
What content would you share with your audience to promote your business?

  • Billboards & Hoardings

Where would you need professional quality pictures to share your business-related content?

Except for TV and Radio shows/adverts (i.e broadcasting medium), you will need images on all the publishing and internet-based platforms, right?


We’ve talked about social media content in enough detail in my previous blog, so we will focus on other Internet-based platforms and Publishing mediums this time.
Let’s say, you’ve got a chance to put an advert or article about your business in a local newspaper/magazine which you think is a great opportunity to spread the word about your business. Now you get an email from the editor of this publishing medium to share the design or your own picture for the advert/article. You call a designer friend to create a nice advert design for you but guess what, he also asks you to give a nice professional standard picture of you or your business. To your own surprise, you don’t have any.
The question here is: Would you like to share a nice selfie from your mobile phone or would you prefer to share a professional standard image because it’s a great opportunity to shout out about your business and you don’t want to look like an amateur business but a true professional.
I’m sure, you would do the same for your billboards and hoardings as well, am I right?
Same consciousness and attitude are needed for your emails, blogs and newsletters. You don’t want to end up wasting time on stock images trying to find out the perfect image that will suit the content of your blog or whatever. I’m not saying you should not do that because I’m saying so, well it’s a personal choice but ask yourself if it will make the same impact on your audience as the image/graphic that’s authentic and created just for you?

Understand this way! You have created something in your business by studying various details about it and have looked into the intricacies of it. You have genuinely put in your heart and soul to create it. Now, you’re ready to share it with the world because you truly want to help people with its benefits but guess what, the world is filled with information! People are seeking knowledge, products and services but they get confused about where to go. If your message strike with what they are trying to find, they will get attracted towards you. So, it’s really really important that you give the right message and not just follow what others are doing. Don’t do anything compulsively but act consciously.

When you explain your product or service to a professional photographer, he/she will understand it the way you want to put it out to the world. A selfie or a stock image cannot help you that way or deliver your message. Professional photography is a great deal in any business especially if you’re just starting off because there are dozens of businesses out there like your’s and you really need to work hard to not compete but to stand out and make an impact.
